Troop Night Programme

Opening

The Scout Uniform Instead of Inspection, each Patrol thinks of an unusual, but practical use for some part of his Scout Uniform. Scarf and sling will be the obvious one to all Scouts. Hey Presto you have a theme for a complete evening (First Aid).

Game

Game which also Teaches How many of your Scouts can fold the union flag properly for flag break. This needs a little preparation. You will need one flag per patrol (square of cloth will do if you don’t have enough flags) and a length of rope for hoisting. Speed and accuracy are the prime factors. Each member of the patrol has to prepare, hoist and break the flag. Adapt this with your own rules.

Training

Training needs to be fun It is all too easy to neglect the basic progressive achievement awards. Here is way to involve all levels in a single theme. Layout a complete campsite (you can do this indoors)(or outdoors gives you more room). Each patrol has an element of the campsite to build. Patrol Leaders and senior Scouts can work on the "Leadership Award " by teaching.

Team Work

Singing You may not believe it but children love to sing. Spend 15 minutes each week practicing some songs that they like. My Troop loves " Yellow Submarine" by the Beatles. Get a parent to come in and run this as a regular feature. You will find some songs already prepared on our web site.

Just for Fun

Quick Filler Everybody has the night when they need a quick 15 minute filler to occupy the Scouts.

  1. Build a human tripod using all members of the patrol.
  2. Without using any knots connect six ropes together
  3. Quiz (there are several on Scout base) or make your own.
  4. Skits
  5. Musical chairs
  6. Your own idea ?

Closing

The Scout Promise Each Patrol is given one line or phrase from the Scout Promise during the course of the evening. During their "Patrol meeting" they rewrite the words into their part of the Promise. Just a couple of sentences will do.

At the end of the meeting the Troop say the newly written Scout Promise together.

Just some ideas which you might find useful.

Lots of these ideas came from a very old Scout publication called "Troop Night Programmes" I can photocopy it if anybody wants a copy. Its getting very tatty and old now.
